THE STEPHEN L MOOR SCHOLARSHIP FUND
at CARDINAL HAYES HIGH SCHOOL
On June 15th, 2024 Hayes lost one of its most notable student athletes, Stephen Moor ’72. Steve was an honor student while excelling in three sports: football, basketball and baseball.
In his honor, his family, friends, and classmates would like to announce the establishment of The Stephen L. Moor Class of ’72 Scholarship Fund. The funds will be used to defray the cost of the students’ tuition at Hayes and assist students who, like Steve, excel in their studies as well as athletics.
Those who knew Steve know that he was a humble man and, as such, might not feel worthy of this honor. He might ask “Why would I deserve this...What about all the other student athletes from the class of ‘72 who passed on, such as Jim McBride, Marty O’Hanlon, James Daltner and John Tobin, to name a few?” Besides being humble, Steve, the consummate athlete, understood the meaning of the word “team.” He would look at The Stephen L. Moor Class of ’72 Scholarship Fund and recognize that it represents his team—his classmates, coaches, teachers, and administrators at Cardinal Hayes High School, who all helped to make Steve the person he became.
Hayes makes a difference... and good men
Cardinal Hayes High School has been a beacon and pillar of hope and opportunity in the South Bronx, one of the poorest districts in America since 1941. The school is dedicated to developing young men academically, spiritually, and personally, helping them rise above challenges and reach their full potential.
Founded in 1941, the school has a rich legacy of shaping diverse students from the New York City area into lifelong learners and responsible citizens.
Through a rigorous college preparatory program, Cardinal Hayes consistently achieves impressive results:
99% Graduation rate in the poorest congressional district in the country.
98% of the Class of 2023 was accepted into college, including top-tier universities like Yale, Columbia, and Notre Dame.
Student Body – Over 800 young men from diverse backgrounds.
Faculty-Student Ratio – 16:1, providing personalized attention to each student.
Affordability – Tuition is $8,050, but many students require financial support to attend.
In an area where economic hardship is common, Cardinal Hayes changes lives. The Steve Moor Memorial Scholarship ensures that future generations of Hayesmen will have the same opportunities for success that Steve Moor had—helping students from underprivileged backgrounds access a high-quality education and a brighter future.
Steve was SO PROUD to be a Hayesman.
He would have struggled with accepting such attention and compliments but have been beyond touched and astounded at the efforts to support these future young men in his name.
